Twelve AACN member schools received the American Association for Men in Nursing 2019 Best Schools for Men in Nursing Award

The purpose of the award is to recognize a nursing school or college that has provided significant efforts in recruiting and retaining men in nursing, in providing men a supportive educational environment and in educating faculty, students and the community about the contributions men have made and do make to the nursing profession.

Ohio State East Hospital Awarded “Federally-Qualified Health Center” Status

HRSA has awarded full “Federally-Qualified Health Center” status to The Ohio State University College of Nursing’s Total Health and Wellness Center, a nurse practitioner-led comprehensive primary care health center at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center East Hospital.

Moore Foundation Funds Nurse Leader Fellowship Program at UC Davis

The University of California, Davis has received a $37.5 million grant from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation to launch the Betty Irene Moore Fellowship Program for Nurse Leaders and Innovators at the university's Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing. The new fellowship program recognizes early-career nursing scholars and innovators with high potential to accelerate leadership in nursing-science research, practice, education, policy, and entrepreneurship.

UT’s College of Nursing Receives $7.5 Million

The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, College of Nursing has received the largest gift in its history—$7.5 million—from alumna Sara Croley and her husband, Ross. The purpose of the gift is twofold, with $5.5 million supporting the college’s building renovation and expansion and $2 million establishing the Sara Rosenbalm Croley Endowed Dean’s Chair.

Tuskegee University Dean Wins Workforce Diversity in Nursing Award

Dr. Constance Hendricks, Dean of the Tuskegee University School of Nursing & Allied Health, was awarded the Mary Elizabeth Carnegie Award at the Southern Regional Education Board’s Council on Collegiate Education for Nursing annual meeting in November in Atlanta. The award is given by the council to a nurse educator who best exemplifies Carnegie’s quest for excellence in nursing education.

Dr. Terri Weaver Named to Crain’s Chicago Business’ 2019 list of Notable Women in Health Care

Dr. Terri Weaver, Dean and Professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Nursing and AACN Board Member at Large, recently was named to Crain’s Chicago Business’ 2019 list of Notable Women in Health Care. In choosing her for the honor, Crain’s noted that under Dr. Weaver’s leadership, the college opened a $6.1 million, cutting-edge simulation lab; developed a novel, nurse-managed clinic; and worked with the state Department of Corrections to analyze healthcare at 26 correctional facilities, leading to better care for the incarcerated.

Vanderbilt Receives Two HRSA Awards

Vanderbilt University School of Nursing has received two HRSA awards totaling more than $5 million to increase the number of nurse practitioners working in rural and underserved communities where there are not enough primary care providers.

Florida Gulf Coast's DNP Program Receives $2.7 Million Grant

Florida Gulf Coast University School of Nursing’s DNP Program has received a 4-year, $2.7 million grant to increase the number of nurse practitioner students educated to provide high-quality primary care to rural and underserved populations.

Dr. Susan Bindon Named President-elect of ANPD

Dr. Susan L. Bindon, University of Maryland School of Nursing (UMSON) associate professor and director of UMSON's DNP post master's option, has been named president-elect of the Association for Nursing Professional Development (ANPD). She has also been selected as a member of the inaugural class of AACN's Elevating Leaders in Academic Nursing (ELAN) Program.

Decker School of Nursing to Transform to Decker College of Nursing and Health Sciences Univers

The Decker School of Nursing at Binghamton University (NY) will be transforming into the Decker College of Nursing and Health Sciences when it moves to its new campus, expected later next year. Within the college, two new graduate schools will be formed: The School of Applied Sciences and the School of Rehabilitation Sciences.

Humboldt State University Receives Endowment Fund to Address Local Shortage of Nurses

Humboldt State University’s (HSU) RN-to-BSN Nursing program has received a $300,000 grant from the Orvamae Emmerson Endowment Fund of the Humboldt Area Foundation. The grant will support HSU’s nursing program, which is designed to address a severe local shortage of nurses and to meet the specific needs of the region’s rural communities.

East Carolina University Awarded $2.79 Million Grant from HRSA

HRSA awarded a $2.79 million grant to East Carolina University’s College of Nursing that will allow the school to create the Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) Academic-Clinical Practice Collaborative.

UIC Nursing Receives $1 Million Gift for Simulation Lab

The University of Illinois at Chicago College of Nursing has received a $1 million gift from Juanita and Phil Francis to create the Nita & Phil Francis Family Birthing Suite within the college's new simulation laboratory. The 15,000-sq-ft facility will be among the largest and most cutting-edge sim labs in any U.S. nursing school.

Dr. Judy Didion Named Notable Women in Education Leadership

Dr. Judy Didion, professor and dean of Oakland University's School of Nursing, has been named to Crain's Detroit Business' 2019 list of Notable Women in Education Leadership. Along with other honorees, she is featured in a special section of Crain's September 23 online and print issue. Dr. Didion is a mentor in AACN's MentorLINK program and a member of the Organizational Leadership Network.

College of Nursing dean honored with National Leadership in Ethics Award

Dr. Laurie Badzek, Dean of the College of Nursing at Penn State, has been selected to receive the American Nurses Association’s Leadership in Ethics Award. The award was created to recognize a registered nurse who has authentically demonstrated the highest standards of ethics and leadership in their daily practice, served as an ethical role model and promoted ethical dialogue and scholarship.

Pittsburg State University To Get Simulation Hospital

A simulation hospital will be built for the School of Nursing at Pittsburg State University in Kansas, thanks to $6 million from private donors, who initiated the project after learning of the need. The project is envisioned as an approximately 5,000 square-foot addition, plus targeted renovations to an existing building, which would accommodate cohorts of 120 students.

Nurse Researchers from Washington State University Visit Thailand

A team of nurse researchers from Washington State University (WSU) left for Thailand on January 1 to join Thai colleagues in looking at the unique care provided to cancer patients at Arokhayasala Khampramong Temple, which offers traditional and complementary interventions and palliative care for cancer patients.

Kent State’s College of Nursing Receives Grant

Kent State University's College of Nursing has received a three-year, $165,000 grant from Peg's Foundation, (formerly the Margaret Clark Morgan Foundation), a private grant-making foundation that supports mental health programs in Northeast Ohio. The grant will continue the Peg's Foundation traineeship program for graduate students pursuing a master's degree in nursing as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner.

Eight AACN Member School Receive Diversity Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity Magazine

Eight AACN member schools are recipients of the Health Professions Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine. They were among 43 health professions schools selected to receive the honor, which recognizes U.S. nursing, medical, dental, pharmacy, osteopathic, and allied health schools that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion. They are featured in the current issue of INSIGHT Into Diversity, the oldest and largest diversity-focused publication in higher education.

Dr. Kenneth Dion Elected to President-Elect of Sigma

Dr. Kenneth Dion, Assistant Dean for Business Innovation & Strategic Relationships at Johns Hopkins School of Nursing, has been elected President-Elect of Sigma. Starting in 2021, Dion will lead Sigma’s Board of Directors and the greater organization in its mission to develop nurse leaders anywhere to improve health care everywhere.

University of New Mexico Award 2.5 Million HRSA Grant

Dr. Carolyn Montoya, Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs at The University of New Mexico College of Nursing, was awarded a four-year $2.5 million grant from HRSA's Advanced Nursing Education Workforce program, a continuation of her $1.5 million grant awarded in 2017.

UNMC Receives $1.67 Million HRSA Grant

The University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Nursing received a four-year, $1.67 million grant from HRSA to launch a residency program for recently graduated nurse practitioners in rural and underserved areas.

Johns Hopkins Receives Diversity Award

The Johns Hopkins School of Nursing (JHSON) has received the 2019 Health Professions Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine. It is the second year in a row JHSON has received this national honor recognizing the school's outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion.

University of South Alabama Receives $1.4 Million HRSA Grant

The University of South Alabama College of Nursing has received a $1.3 million HRSA grant to recruit and train psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners, students, nurse professionals, and other professionals. Funding will be used to support opioid and substance abuse prevention, treatment, and recovery services in high-need areas.

Sr. Rosemary Donley Recognized as Distinguished Daughter of Pennsylvania

Sr. Rosemary Donley, Professor at Duquesne University, is one of eight women honored by Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf as a 2019 Distinguished Daughters of Pennsylvania.

University of Rochester receives $1 million to enhance academic experience

The University of Rochester has received a $1 million Higher Education Capital Matching Grant from New York State to enhance the academic experience and serve additional students at the School of Nursing. The grant will help fund a $5 million expansion to the Loretta C. Ford Education Wing of Helen Wood Hall to create new teaching and learning space.

Florida Atlantic University Announce Partnership Aimed at Advancing the Nursing Profession

Florida Atlantic University's (FAU) Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing and Cross Country Healthcare, a national leader in providing innovative healthcare workforce solutions and staffing services, have announced a partnership to pursue collaborative research, educational, and training activities of mutual interest that advance the nursing profession. A key objective of the partnership will be to jointly support nurses and their education through FAU's continuing educational programs, scholarships, internships, residency, and research opportunities.

The Ohio State University College of Nursing Awarded Grants for Keto-Related Project

The Rita & Alex Hillman Foundation has awarded a one-year, $50,000 Hillman Emergent Innovation Program grant to two research faculty from The Ohio State University College of Nursing for their program, "Keto Prescribed: Translating Ketogenic Research into Clinical Practice." Sigma Theta Tau International also has awarded the project a $20,000 American Nurses Credentialing Center Evidence-Based Practice Implementation Grant to fund the initial round of participants. The program explores keto eating, other interventions, and impact on cardiovascular risk for African American women.

Pamela Cipriano Receives ANCC Prestigious Award

Dr. Pam Cipriano, Dean of the School of Nursing at the University of Virginia, received the 2019 Gretta Styles Madden Award at the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Magnet Conference. The award is named for the late professor, dean, and nurse leader Gretta Styles, who was the only nurse to serve as president of the ANCC, International Council of Nurses, American Nurses Association, and California Board of Registered Nursing.

UMSON’s Dorsey Receives Welch/Woerner Path-Paver Award from NINR

At the recent Friends of the National Institute of Nursing Research (FNINR) gala held in Washington, DC, Dr. Susan G. Dorsey, Professor and Chair, Department of Pain and Translational Symptom Science, University of Maryland School of Nursing, and co-director of the Center to Advance Chronic Pain Research, University of Maryland, Baltimore, received FNINR’s 2019 Welch/Woerner Path-Paver Award.

UAB Receives $1.13 Million HRSA Grant

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Nursing received a three-year, $1.13 million grant from HRSA to partner with the UAB College of Arts and Sciences Department of Social Work to prepare more nurse practitioners and social workers to provide high-quality interprofessional care for opioid use disorder.

UR Launches Articulation Agreement with St. Lawrence University

The agreement allows St. Lawrence students to apply for early acceptance to the University of Rochester School of Nursing’s Accelerated Bachelor’s Program for nurses during their junior year and receive notification of their admission status by the end of the summer following their junior year.

Samford University’s Ida Moffett School of Nursing will receive a 4-year, $3.5 million HRSA grant to place nurse practitioner graduates in rural, underserved areas for primary-care residency. The grant is the largest in Samford University’s history.

University of Maryland School of Nursing Faculty Members Awarded Over $2.4 Million

Four University of Maryland School of Nursing faculty members have been awarded Nurse Support Program II grants totaling more than $2.4 million. The grants aid in increasing nursing capacity in Maryland by implementing statewide initiatives to grow the number of nurses prepared to serve effectively in faculty roles, thereby increasing the number of students who can be enrolled in Maryland nursing schools and subsequently increasing the number of qualified nurses across the state.

Dr. Victoria Niederhauser Named Endowed Dean's Chair

Dr. Victoria Niederhauser, Dean of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, College of Nursing, has been named to the Sara Rosenbalm Croley Endowed Dean’s Chair. The $2 million endowment is a reflection of Dr. Niederhauser’s service to the college and the university.
